isaac sat on his father’s lap in the front seat, and steve drove. it was slow going, with wet red-dirt roads untended and full of dips and jolts, potholes galore. i was reminded of the spring trip to my aunt’s house in minnesota, taking sopping, muddy gravel back roads to her house in the country.

we stopped in the countryside near moi’s bridge, so steve could chat with some locals. I handed the camera to darrel, elsie’s son, so he could snap a picture of the vividly violet jacaranda tree down the road on his side of the car. it looked unreal. i didn’t even notice at first darrel had taken a picture of the man with the motorbike too. the man looked uncertain as he stared at darrel, permanently frozen in the photgraph. this is one of my favorite pictures from kenya.
